Main Aims/Objectives
The main objective of the curricular unit is to introduce students to one of the main fields of contemporary Criminology, focusing on themes and lines of research that are central to an integrated understanding of security in contemporary Western societies.
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Identify and characterize the various dimensions of (in) security, developing conceptual and methodological tools that are essential to the development of critical thinking

-- Characterize the models of crime and insecurity prevention, identifying their rationalities and main strategies.
-Understand the evolution of the governance of crime and security in western societies, based on contemporary analyses.
- Know the current organization of some models of internal security, from a comparative approach of the Portuguese experience.
Skills to be acquired
Students are expected to develop analytical, methodological and technical skills involved in the study of security issues.
Teaching Procedures
Theoretical and practical classes that combine the exposition of the syllabus contents with the use of teaching methodologies which comprehend eliciting techniques that provide the opportunity to consolidate and apply theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills. The tutorial classes allow the supervision of the written assignment.

Evaluation Type
The CE includes: i) class attendance; ii) 2 written tests; ii) a written assignment (the planning of a preventive intervention) and its discussion.
