Main Aims/Objectives
Following the curricular unit of Quantitative Data Analysis of the Degree, the objective of this curricular unit is to continue the acquisition of knowledge by students in a set of data analysis methods of an inferential nature.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- Acquire skills and knowledge that allow students to understand and conduct studies of a quantitative nature, using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), Linear Regression and also non-parametric statistics. - Application of knowledge using IBM SPSS statistical software, with the aim of students continuing to acquire skills in using this data analysis software.
Skills to be acquired
It is expected that at the end of the UC students will be able to:
- Reveal quantitative data analysis skills using IBM SPSS.
- Understand and use statistical language.
- Understand, select, apply, and interpret inferential statistics procedures appropriately.
Teaching Procedures
Theoretical-practical classes using the expository method and exemplification of the resolution of practical exercises (using target variables for study in criminology research) using IBM SPSS Statistics. In classes, brief work is carried out to apply knowledge and skills, involving data analysis and respective report writing according to APA standards. Classes take place in a computer laboratory.
Programme
Analysis of variance (ANOVA) with one factor:
i) Variance Analysis Assumptions
ii) Inter-subjects (one-way)
iii) Intra-subjects (repeated measures)
Non-parametric statistics:
i) Kruskal Wallis test for more than two independent samples
ii) Friedman test for more than two paired samples
Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)
Regression Analysis
i) Notion of linear correlation and its graphical representation
ii)Simple linear regression (1 interval and dichotomous predictor)
iii) Multiple linear regression (2 or more interval predictors)
Evaluation Type
Completion of 1 written work consisting of a quantitative report on a database, written according to APA standards. Students must be present in 70% of classes to have continuous assessment
