Main Aims/Objectives

Provide a set of information, knowledge and tools to allow the student a comprehensive knowledge of art history and the role it played in the civilizing process, equipping him for the measurements also plural of the art object.
Simultaneously we intend to develop the student´s sensitivity to adapt and apply knowledge to the field of artistic area.
Integrate the history and theory of architecture into artistic movements without which architectural conception is emptied of its purpose and cultural vocation.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Understand Art in its pressing duplicity of "Useful" and "Beautiful", as discourse and semiotic expression.
Identify and chronologically characterize the main artistic movements, as well as some of their protagonists, contextualizing the artistic phenomenon in the universe of political, social, cultural and religious ideas, in each era.

Skills to be acquired

-To identify and understand the subject matter and artistic work as a document / privileged testimony of its historical time.
- Identify and characterize the artistic movements that interact with Architecture and, thus, complement the Curricular unit of
Architecture I.
-To develop a critical attitude as receiver and user of art objects.
-To use artistic references as a stimulus for creativity in the professional area.

Teaching Procedures

Expository method: using various materials, enabling the transmission of knowledge in a structured and continuous manner.
Interrogative method: questioning, where appropriate, the students.
Active method: students should take the initiative to combine the subject with other bibliographic topics in order to allow a better consolidation of the knowledge acquired.

Programme

Background of Contemporary Art.
Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Expressionism.
From Analytical Cubism to Synthetic Cubism.
The Dada movement and the surrealist movement.
Malevich and Suprematism.
Artistic production of the Modern Movement.
Monumentalism in political propaganda in the middle of World War II.
The socio-cultural function of Art History.
From contemplative art to interactive performance of global art.
Contemporary trends.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation will be done through two individual assignments, plus attendance at the end of the semester.

Teaching Resources

Make use of new information and communication technologies.
Use of images (slides, powerpoints and videos) that illustrate and substantiate the theory.
Promotion of activities aimed at the observation, reflection and debate of the artistic phenomenon.
