Main Aims/Objectives

The Buildings discipline has as its general objectives, to investigate, develop and represent all the constructive components indispensable for the correct functioning of the building, coherently integrating structural, constructive [resulting from the systems and solutions adopted] and architectural metrics, that is, materiality and constructivity .

Specific Aims/Objectives

In this context, the study of the construction cut [from the roof to the foundations, passing through the intermediate floors] takes on particular importance, due to the direct implication in the architectural design of the building.
Introduce the theme of building construction, mainly the understanding of the building physics that underlies the exercise of the architectural project, in its transition to construction.

Skills to be acquired

Understanding and representation, both by two-dimensional and three-dimensional means, of the nexus of coherence between architectural form and the various construction systems that materialize it.
Mastery of the details of the housing building, in particular the representation of the construction cut and the construction detail.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical / practical moments. In the theoretical / practical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the topics and information necessary for the progress of the works will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and debate of results. In the classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and performed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the development of the works.

Programme

Based on the project developed in the Curricular Unit of Project I [can be carried out from another project discipline that the student is attending], the construction system must be studied and its details detailed in the integrated graphic scales, in the respective phases of the semester work.
The syllabus of the Curricular Unit for Buildings is divided into three phases:

1st Phase - Constructive characterization
1. Synthetic text, descriptive of the constructive system to be adopted [materiality and constructivity];
1.1. Structure, foundations and relationship with the terrain;
1.2. System designed for exterior and interior walls;
1.3. Indoor and outdoor floors;
1.4. Coverage system, type of coverage;
1.5. Interior and exterior frames [window frames];
1.6. Outdoor spaces;
2. Presentation of a reference project;
3. Representation of the synopsis, with the limits of the constructive cut [cellars, ground floor, type floor, circulation and crowning of the building];
3.1. Identification of the intended function for each of the spaces that make up the constructive cut.

2nd Phase - Dough project
1. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at 1: 5, 1: 2 and / or 1: 1, of the elements that define the building structure, [retaining walls, foundations, supporting walls, slabs, etc. ];
2. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at 1: 5, 1: 2 and / or 1: 1, of the materials that define the building´s interior and exterior masonry;
3. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at 1: 5, 1: 2 and 1: 1, of rough dimensions, [masonry, floors, ceilings, roofs, etc.].

3rd Phase - Finishing project
1. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at 1: 5, 1: 2 and / or 1: 1 scale, of the different strata that incorporate the walls, ceilings, sub-ceilings and floors, of the spaces identified in the Constructive Section ;
1.1. Interior and exterior elevations with the identification of the main lining materials, their stereotomy and implication in the expression and characterization of spaces;
1.2. Identification of finishing dimensions. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at 1: 5, 1: 2 and 1: 1, of finishing dimensions [roofs, walls, floors, ceilings, sub-ceiling, etc.];
1.3. The subtitling model to be adopted in the drawings must clearly identify the Constructive function, Material used and "general dimensioning", of the different materials to be applied;
1.4. All spaces represented, in the most diverse projections, must be properly rated [partial and total shares].

Evaluation Type

Due to the discipline´s character, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to problems and challenges will be taken into account. Two written tests and assignments will also be included in the continuous assessment, according to the school calendar. The fundamental evaluation moments established will also be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available at the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for learning and elaborating research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
