Main Aims/Objectives
The discipline of Buildings has as general objectives, to investigate, develop and represent all the constructive components essential for the correct functioning of the building, coherently integrating structural, constructive [derived from the adopted systems and solutions] and architectural metrics.
Relate the discipline of Buildings with the practice of Integrated Project crossing information from other Curricular Units, in the perspective of interdisciplinarity.
Specific Aims/Objectives
It is intended to identify and represent the different layers that make up the building, thus solving the so-called "bridges". In this context, the study of the constructive node [from the roof to the foundations, passing through the intermediate floors of the building] acquires particular importance, due to its direct implication in the architectural design of the building.
Skills to be acquired
Understanding and representation, both by two-dimensional and three-dimensional means, of the coherence nexus between architectural form and the various constructive systems that materialize it.
Mastering the detailing of the residential building, in particular the representation of the constructive cut and constructive detail.
Teaching Procedures
The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical/practical moments. In theoretical/practical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the themes and information necessary for the progress of the work will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and results debates will be made. In classes will be implemented and executed the proposed exercises, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in groups or individually, the development of the work.
Programme
Based on the project developed in the Project Course I [which can be carried out from another project subject that the student is attending], the construction system and its detailing in the integrated graphic scales should be carried out. in the respective phases of the semester work.
The syllabus of the Curricular Unit of Buildings is divided into three phases:
1st Phase - Constructive characterization
1. Synthesis text, descriptive of the constructive system to be adopted [materiality and constructiveness];
1.1. Structure, foundations and relationship with the land;
1.2. System provided for exterior and interior walls;
1.3. Interior, exterior floors;
1.4. Cover system, type of cover;
1.5. Interior and exterior frames [windows];
1.6. Outdoor spaces;
2. Presentation of a reference project;
3. Representation of the synopsis, with the limits of the constructive cut [basements, ground floor, standard floor, circulations and crowning of the building];
3.1. Identification of the function foreseen for each of the spaces that make up the constructive cut.
2nd Phase - Rough Project
1. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings at scale 1:5, 1:2 and/or 1:1, of the elements that define the structure of the building, [retaining walls, foundations, load-bearing walls, slabs, etc. ];
2. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings in 1:5, 1:2 and/or 1:1 scale, of the materials that define the interior and exterior masonry of the building;
3. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings in 1:5, 1:2 and 1:1 scale, of rough dimensions [masonry, floors, ceilings, roofs, etc.].
3rd Phase - Finishing Project
1. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings in 1:5, 1:2 and/or 1:1 scale, of the various layers that incorporate the walls, ceilings, sub-ceilings and floors, of the spaces identified in the Construction Section ;
1.1. Interior and exterior elevations with the identification of the main covering materials, their stereotomy and implication in the expression and characterization of spaces;
1.2. Identification of finishing dimensions. Representation in 1:10 scales, with partial drawings in 1:5, 1:2 and 1:1 scale, of the finishing dimensions [roofing, walls, floors, ceilings, sub-ceiling, etc.];
1.3. The subtitling model to be adopted in the drawings must clearly identify the constructive function, material used and general dimensioning of the different materials to be applied;
1.4. All spaces represented, in the most diverse projections, must be duly quoted [partial and total quotas].
Evaluation Type
Due to the nature of the discipline, the assessment will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance will be taken into account, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to the problems and challenges launched. The continuous assessment will also include two written tests and assignments, according to the school calendar. The fundamental moments of established assessment will also be fulfilled: the Attendance Test and the Final Exam.

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography available in the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for learning and elaboration of research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
