Main Aims/Objectives
Investigate Architecture and Urbanism and their representation of universal value from a historical, aesthetic, ethnological or anthropological point of view, and perceive urban evolution as a commitment ring between sustainable, inclusive and intelligent development, in a line of reflection where different levels of analysis of the urban space, emphasizing sustainability and integrated urban regeneration in the selected intervention zone.
Specific Aims/Objectives
The curricular unit of Urbanism proposes an approximation to the reality of our cities, using knowledge and mental, cultural and manual instruments, realizing that modernity is not a state; it is a temporal exercise in which research, design and application are not aligned. We will develop a synthesis exercise that is intended to structure the identity and quality of the territory applied to the Municipality of Matosinhos.
Skills to be acquired
Domínio dos conhecimentos e instrumentos que englobam as diversas escalas de atuação e os vários âmbitos temáticos do urbanismo, bem como os âmbitos programáticos que o constituem. As competências na inserção urbana e objetual, qualificação linguística, morfológica e tipológica das estruturas urbanas edificadas e não edificadas, bem como a organização e concretização formal e material destes espaços.
Teaching Procedures
As aulas abordarão exemplos diversos, motivando a capacidade de análise e consequente debate, das questões apresentadas.
Como apoio à investigação, os alunos desenvolverão um trabalho práticos permitindo o conhecimento da relação entre a teoria e a prática.
Programme
The program of the discipline of urbanism in architecture covers the following topics:
1. Introduction to urbanism: basic concepts, history and evolution of urbanism; main theories and currents of thought.
2. Urban planning: processes and stages of urban planning, analysis and diagnosis of the territory, elaboration of urban projects and urban planning instruments.
3. Urban design: principles and techniques of urban design, elements of urban form, organization of public space, road hierarchy, urban infrastructure.
4. Urban mobility: urban mobility planning and management, public transport systems, accessibility and sustainable mobility.
5. Urban sustainability: concepts and practices of urban sustainability, sustainable urban planning, energy efficiency, rational use of water, waste management, green spaces and urban biodiversity.
6. Urban legislation: norms and laws related to urbanism and land use planning, works and buildings code, urban zoning, control instruments and urban inspection.
7. Participation and urban management: citizen participation in urban planning and management, participation instruments, urban management councils and committees.
8. Urban heritage: preservation and enhancement of urban heritage, heritage preservation legislation, urban rehabilitation, rehabilitation of degraded areas.
9. Urbanism and society: relationship between urban space and society, socio-spatial inequalities, social inclusion, right to the city.
10. Case studies: analysis of urban projects and interventions, case studies of cities and neighborhoods, critical analysis of urban experiences and application in an urban area to be selected.
Evaluation Type
The evaluation will be based on attendance, participation and commitment in debates held in class during privileged contact by the teaching space, in the execution and presentation of work on the application of knowledge.
The works requested are the subject of a separate statement, following the most
appropriate for the objective to be achieved and properly timed.

The components of the learning environment to be used will be the referred bibliographic elements.
