Main Aims/Objectives

To present fundamental sociological approaches and concepts for understanding the social, political and cultural uses, representations and meanings attributed to architecture and space;
To establishing a compromise between the study of theoretical and analytical aspects and intervention in space.
To understand the relationships between social/economic/political/cultural phenomena and structural physical characteristics of urbanized spaces.

Specific Aims/Objectives

To know urban phenomena that result from social, political, economic and cultural changes; identify and understand social problems resulting from urban settings; equate architectural and urban proposals for contemporary urban and social problems.

Skills to be acquired

To develop a critical attitude that allows critically evaluating the social world in urban contexts, operationalizing the conceptual frameworks of sociology;
To sociologically analyze urban and architectural interventions in the domain of the city;
To propose urban solutions with the objective of solving social problems related to urban space;
To develop a culture of reflective and critical citizenship.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical lectures;
Study and discussion of thematic texts and national and international cases of cities and architectural works adjusted to the syllabus.

Programme

1 Theorising and interpreting the city and the urban through Sociology
1.1 Brief analysis of fundamental theoretical approaches to Urban Sociology.
1.2 Social space and its representations.

2. Fragmented cities: dynamics of socio-spatial composition
2.1 The dual city;
2.2 Fortification of the city and struggle for territory: gentrification and gated communities.
2.3 The struggle and fortification of territories: the feeling of insecurity and crime prevention policies through urban design - models and criticisms.

3. Reimagining cities
3.1. The SAAL project as a reinvention of the city based on participatory democracy and the reversal of the social housing policy in Portugal developed by the Estado Novo;
3.2. Examples of social and participatory architecture.
3.3. Public space and citizenship.

4. Cities, identities and promotion of territories
4.1. Intercity competition and promotion of cities;
4.2. Heritage, city images and urban tourism;
4.3. City images, architecture and spectacle cities.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation will focus on the Frequency and Exam tests carried out for this purpose, in addition to two interim tests.

Teaching Resources

Supporting thematic texts, documentaries and reports alluding to the themes of the syllabus, teaching materials (slides, specific bibliography).
