Main Aims/Objectives

It is based on the Project-Research relationship embodied by the theme of Conservation, in its multiple aspects: rehabilitation, urban rehabilitation, building in and with the built. It reflects and consolidates the tools, methodologies and processes previously acquired, integrating scales ranging from urban landscape relations to constructive detail, and acquires autonomy of critical thinking through the acquisition of research capacity, understanding and research methods.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Development of a single practical Project exercise in a pre-existence (building, ensemble or place), which constitutes the synthesis of the scientific and cultural knowledge previously acquired, embodied by the foundations of the culture of Conservation of Architectural Heritage. The Project constitutes a participatory form of research, by building knowledge and arousing a culture of research.

Skills to be acquired

The programme proposes the application of the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the CS for the formalisation of a Project proposal and consequent mastery of the knowledge and instruments that encompass the architect´s performance in the intervention in the built heritage, from the scale of the landscape and the territory to the scale of the built and its intersection with a research work, which leads, after completing this CU, to the formalisation of the Master´s Dissertation.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical classes provide the acquisition of the essential concepts and knowledge that underpin and frame the practical activities. They are complemented with demonstration classes of the application of concepts to real cases, exploring the evocative power of images and the effectiveness of visual discourse for Architecture students. The practical classes lead to the application of the acquired knowledge and the exchange of experiences and acquired knowledge (simulation of praxis).

Programme

A - Theoretical part
Project of an intervention in a pre-existence, requalifying it and reactivating the surrounding area. The programme contents of the theoretical component focus on theories and concepts about:
. Contextual framework: analysis, registration and diagnosis of architectural structures and their surroundings;
. Materials and elements of construction;
. Pathologies in buildings: causes, basic vocabulary and diagnosis;
. Methodologies for analysis, diagnosis and intervention;
. Historical perspective on intervention in the built;
. Building in the built: evolution of the concepts of rehabilitation, conservation and valorisation;
. Conservation and rehabilitation of buildings and built ensembles, classified and not classified;
. Recovery and reconversion of rural, industrial and religious heritage;
. Tradition and innovation in architectural transformation;
. The constructive detail: coherence, resolution and its implication in the image of architecture;
. Representation and presentation of the architectural project.
. Development and organisation of a research in all its components, namely the identification of the research question, characterisation of the state of knowledge on that topic, identification of the objectives, systematisation of a research methodology, creation of a structure of the argument and construction and interpretation of a body of references.
B - Practical part
On a defined territory, a unique exercise will be developed on a place or a pre-existing building, at various scales and variable complexities. At the same time, research will be carried out that allows the approval of the dissertation plan and the consequent development until the formalisation of the dissertation. The programme contents are subdivided into:
. Registration of urban and architectural analysis and critical reading of the context supported by the theoretical part.
. Elaboration of research to define the object and objectives that will allow structuring the master´s dissertation work. The research themes must be integrated into CITAD´s research lines, framed in the resolution of contemporary problems of society.
. Analysis, characterisation and diagnosis of a pre-existing building, in all its complexity.
. Elaboration of an intervention strategy supported by criteria appropriate to the pre-existence and its surroundings.
. Development of the architectural project, from the preliminary design phase to the execution project phase, focusing on the programmatic rationale and constructive materialisation solutions compatible with the pre-existence.
. Development of the graphic, written and oral communication skills of the architectural project.
. Research and collection of information (of a technological, typological, morphological, functional, constructive or other nature) through the observation of projects, programmes, cases or theoretical basis, their analysis and systematisation, to constitute the state of the art and enable the evaluation of results.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation is continuous and takes as reference the research components and the specific practice of the CU Project III, which is developed with deliveries in successive stages throughout the academic year. The main stages of assessment correspond to the frequency examinations, at the end of each semester, where deliveries are made according to the development of the theoretical-practical exercises contained in the programme.

Teaching Resources

In order to achieve the objectives and competences required, visits are made to the places where the practical work is carried out, to carry out readings of the territory, place and object. The specialised bibliography available in the media library and library of Lusíada University is given. Fundamental texts for learning, statistical elements for the elaboration of research works and other information deemed relevant are indicated.
