Main Aims/Objectives
This course focuses on the geopolitical space formed by Europe and the US, i.e. on the analysis of the various dimensions of transatlantic relations since 1945. It also concentrates on some of the most pressing problems and debates on the EU-US relation as well as on the positioning of the West in the current global governance structures.
Specific Aims/Objectives
It is intended that students are able to rigorously characterize the euro-atlantic space, analyzing critically the evolution of transatlantic relations, the challenges facing the transatlantic security community, its positioning in the face of emerging powers and behavior in the current global governance structures. Promoting the ability to think about the future of transatlantic relations is another aim of the course.
Skills to be acquired
By the end of the course, students should be able to think critically on the key themes defining the various dimensions of transatlantic relations as well as on the challenges that the euro-atlantic region faces in a globalized world. Students should also demonstrate the ability to project the different possible futures for the EU-US relation.
Teaching Procedures
Classes will be as interactive as possible. It will be encoureged reflection and debate in the classroom, the executation of writings and the analysis of documents, using audiovisual media whenever possible. In class tutorial the teacher will guide each student, in order to clarify doubts and regulate the development of the academic work.

I.1. 1945-1949: American commitment to Europe

I.3. 1957-1961: tension and coexistence
I.4. 1961-1972: challenged America
I.5. 1973-1983: Atlantic distance
I.6. 1984-1989: walls come down

Part II – Transatlantic relations in the 21st century
II.1. The transatlantic security community: “friends again” or “drifting apart”?
II.2. Defining threats and interests: drivers, processes, and objectives

II.4. NATO after the Lisbon Summit
II.5. NATO and the CSDP

Evaluation Type
Continuous assessment includes:

. Oral and written presentation of five reviews of scientific articles;
