Main Aims/Objectives

To understand and apply the appropriate inferential statistics procedures, through the
use of IBM SPSS Statistical (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) software .

Specific Aims/Objectives

To select and apply, critical and reasoned, the most appropriate statistical procedure.
To present and correctly interpret the results.
To understand and use statistical language, particularly with regard to reading and writing research
reports, according to the APA style.

Skills to be acquired

Using IBM SPSS Statistics for registration and data analysis.
Understanding and application of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Understanding and use of statistical language.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical -Practical classes using the lecture method and problem solving / practical exercises
in IBM SPSS Statistics.
Carrying out brief practice works on the application of knowledge and skills, involving statistical analysis and respective report writing according to the APA style.

Programme

1. Introductory Concepts of Statistics – Concepts of Population, Sample and Subject - Variable Concept - Variable Measurement Scale
2. Using IBM SPSS Statistics - Overview of the application in a Windows environment: Operations and basic commands. - Construction and manipulation of a data file: Introduction of variables and data; Define variables; Data entry/editing; Research and Selection of case/data; Case weighting; Data transformation; Variable calculation; Value recoding.
3. Descriptive Statistics - Measures of central tendency, Measures of dispersion and Forms of data representation (frequency tables and graphs) using SPSS.
4. Theoretical probability distributions: Normal distribution.
5. Inferential Statistics
Formulation of hypotheses: null and alternative hypotheses. Significance probabilities.
Association and Correlation Tests (Chi square; Pearson, Spearman, Biserial Point)
Student´s t test for comparing the means of two independent samples (non-parametric equivalent Mann Whitney Test)
Student´s t test for comparing the means of two paired samples (non-parametric equivalent Wilcoxon test)
One-Way ANOVA (comparison of more than two groups; non-parametric equivalent Kruskal-Wallis Test)
