Main Aims/Objectives

This course aims to analyze the key issues and historical events that marked international relations between 1800 and 1945. Addressing their impact on world order, it is intended that the students acquire knowledge and skills to understand the contemporary world.

Specific Aims/Objectives

It is intended that students are able to identify the thread of international relations over the period analyzed in classes and to understand the motivations, attitudes and behaviors of the various actors in the international arena, as well as its global consequences, acquiring, thus, the ability to link and explain historical events.

Skills to be acquired

At the end of the course, students should be able to: explain the significance of the French Revolution to the development of European policy in the XIX century; explain the consequences of Italian and German unifications for Europe; explain the influence of Bismarck´s diplomacy in European relations; recognize the factors that led to two World Wars and their consequences; demonstrate capability of research and analysis of historical documents.

Teaching Procedures

Classes will be as interactive as possible. It will be encoureged reflection and debate in the classroom, written works and the analysis of documents, using audiovisual media whenever possible. In class tutorial the teacher will guide each student, in order to clarify doubts and regulate the development of the academic work.
