Main Aims/Objectives

This curricular unit aims to analyze matters concerning explanatory theories of trade, the international trade system, the main instruments of trade policy, matters relating to GATT and the WTO, international investment and international financial relations. Finally, some considerations will be made on the phenomenon of international economic integration.

Specific Aims/Objectives

From the characterization of the nature of the main economic currents of the19th and 20th centuries and the most recent variants that are already outlined in the 21th century, the respective roots will be studied, which will lead us to an understanding of the fundamental stages of the evolution of international economic thought in the different social, temporal and spatial contexts.

Skills to be acquired

- Apply acquired knowledge to the explanation of international economic phenomena.
- Understand and put into perspective the international economy and foreign trade based on major theories and doctrines.
- Communicate effectively through written, oral, graphic and numerical language.
- Be able to self-study and research individually or in a group.

Teaching Procedures

The learning methods will be based on the students presence, participation and personal intervention in classes, not only through oral and written exercises, but also through group debates and reflection on specific matters of International Economy, in order to develop the students capacity to critically analyse and comprehend the issues at stake, and also perform group projects to increase the students communication and persuasion skills. Texts and important documentation will be supplied on Moodle.

Evaluation Type

The students will be evaluated according to the General Rules for the Evaluation of Knowledge established by Lusíada University. Therefore, it will be taken into consideration the continuous evaluation of the student, namely the presence, the participation, an individual student essay and two mini-tests.

In classes will be used audiovisual and informatical means, which are supplied by the University, such as the data show.
