Main Aims/Objectives
The Major Objectives of the Curricular Unit "Current Portuguese Foreign Policy" are the study and analysis of the constants and lines of force of Portuguese Foreign Policy between 1976 and 2023.
Specific Aims/Objectives
Study and analyse, with a view to knowing, the guidelines and main objectives of European policy and Portugal´s foreign policy, namely: European integration; the transatlantic connection; cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries and Portuguese communities abroad.
Skills to be acquired
Know the constants and lines of force of Portuguese foreign policy in terms of bilateral and multilateral relations and understand Portugal´s insertion in the world, in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres.
Teaching Procedures
The methodology includes theoretical-practical classes, based on two axes of work. On the one hand, with a previous session of exposure, questioning and debate on the different topics addressed. On the other hand, with the realization and presentation of Written Works.

4. The International Situation: from 1973 to the end of the Cold War.
5. The Democratic Transition and Foreign Policy Options:
5.1. Accession to the EEC;
5.2. Portugal and the Atlantic: the Geopolitical relationship and NATO;
5.3. From the relationship with Portuguese Speaking African Countries (PALOP) to the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries;
5.4. Portuguese Communities in the World.
6. Portugal in the European project:
6.1. From the first enlargement to the Single European Act (AUE);
6.2. The accession of Greece, Portugal and Spain to the EEC;
6.3. The Treaty on European Union and Economic and Social Cohesion.
6.4. From Adhesion to the Single Currency to the Lisbon Summit;
6.5. The European Economic and Social Model and its effects. Internal and External.
7. The Strategic Concept of National Defense
7.1. The International Context: Europe and the European Union; The United States of America and Transatlantic Relations; North Africa and the Middle East; sub-Saharan Africa; the Atlantic; to Asia.

Evaluation Type
The students will be evaluated according to the General Rules for the Evaluation of Knowledge established by Lusíada University. Therefore, it will be taken into consideration the continuous evaluation of the student, namely the presence, the participation, an individual student essay and two mini-tests.
