Main Aims/Objectives

The discipline of Constructive Systems has as general objectives, to deepen the study and the understanding of the mutual and reciprocal implications between the architectural form and the constructive systems that structure and sustain it. In this discipline, special emphasis is placed on current systems (with which students will have more contact in professional practice), not neglecting the investigation of systems considered more experimental.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Investigate, develop and represent all the building components that are essential for the correct functioning of the building, consistently integrating structural and constructive metrics resulting from the systems and solutions adopted.
Develop and define all the covering and / or closing material of the different spaces at the building level, with an impact on the plan of the exterior facades and all the defining surfaces of the interior spaces.

Skills to be acquired

Mastery of the details of the housing building, in particular the representation of the planned cut and the construction detail.
Acquisition of reasonable skills in the preparation of the Project.
The student must look at construction as a stimulus for formal creation.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical / practical moments. In the theoretical / practical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the topics and information necessary for the progress of the works will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and debate of results. In the classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and performed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in group or individually, the development of the works.

Programme

Based on the project developed in the Curricular Unit of Project I [can be carried out from another project discipline that the student is attending], the construction system must be studied and its details detailed in the integrated graphic scales, in the respective phases of the semester work.
The syllabus of the Curricular Unit of Construction Systems is divided into three phases:

1. Finishing Map.
In this first phase of the work, we intend to investigate, develop and represent all the building components that are essential for the correct functioning of the space, coherently integrating constructive metrics, resulting from the details and details adopted.
1.1. Representation in esc. 1:50 of a floor plan and four interior elevations of the kitchen / laundry.
1.1.1. Interior elevations with the identification of the main lining materials, their stereotomy and implication in the expression and characterization of spaces.
1.1.2. All spaces represented, in the most diverse projections, must be properly rated [partial and total shares].
1.1.3. Implementation of all fixed equipment, with implications for water and sewage infrastructures.
1.1.4. Implementation and metric study of all fixed furniture, that is, defining spatial limits.
1.2. Representation of the finish map with the following indications: Material used , Unit design , Constructive function and total and partial areas, to be adopted for each space, namely walls, floors, ceilings and / or sub-ceilings.

2. Planned cuts.
From one of the interior elevations represented in the first phase of the practical work, it must represent two planned cuts, thus defining all the covering material and / or closing the defining surfaces of the interior spaces.
2.1. 1: 5 scale representation of the different strata that incorporate the walls, ceilings, sub-ceilings and floors, of the spaces identified in the planned cuts.
2.1.1. On the scales, 1: 2 and / or 1: 1, representation of two constructive details, of the relationship between the wall with ceilings or sub-ceilings and the floor.
2.1.2. Identification of rough and finishing dimensions.
2.1.3. The drawings of the details and the planned cuts, must be quoted in cm, and their main dimensions identified.
2.1.4. The subtitling model to be adopted in the drawing must clearly identify, the Constructive function , Material used and "general dimensioning", of the different materials to be applied.

3. Carpentry detail.
Having, once again, as a reference the drawings produced in the first phase of the semiannual work, you must choose an exterior and an interior span to detail. In this way, the mastery of the carpentry detail scales is encouraged, with relevance for the elaboration of the execution project.
3.1. Representation of two spans in the 1:50 scale, [two elevations and two cuts in each span] with partial cuts to the scale, 1: 2, of the interior and exterior frames, with particular importance for the carpentry detail.
3.1.1. Detailed drawings must be quoted in cm [relative dimensions], and the main dimensions identified.
3.1.2. The details must be properly labeled, with information regarding the constitution of the window and door, details of carpentry, method of fixing to the wall and finishes.
3.2. Representation of a table for each period identifying: 1-Designation and location; 2-Operation; 3-Hardware; 4? Glass; 5-Finishing material; 6-Sill; 7-Dimension of the gap [rough]; 8-Dimension of the leaf.

Evaluation Type

Due to the discipline´s character, the evaluation will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to problems and challenges will be taken into account. Two written tests and assignments will also be included in the continuous assessment, according to the school calendar. The fundamental evaluation moments established will also be fulfilled: the Frequency Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography and available at the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for learning and elaborating research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.);
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
