Main Aims/Objectives

The discipline of Applied Materials has as general objectives, the deepening of the essential problems of the construction of architecture, its formalization and implementation in a project. Deepening the relationship between the expression of materials and architectural expression.
Understanding the role of materials in the formalization of an architectural discourse and the inherent complexity of the construction process.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Deepening the set of essential knowledge in the field of the use of different types of materials with particular emphasis on building systems used in the formulation of architectural space.
Deepening the reading of architecture in its material condition, allowing students the essential means of understanding the constructive aspects of architecture.

Skills to be acquired

Interpretation and analysis of architectural works through their Formal and Tectonic dimension.
Understanding and critical ability on the evolution of construction techniques, based on observation, investigation and analysis of case studies.
Acquisition of operative instruments at the materiality level that support the understanding of the project from the constructive aspects and its material meaning.

Teaching Procedures

The works are developed through the articulation of theoretical and practical moments. In theoretical classes, the exercises to be carried out will be presented, the themes and information necessary for the progress of the work will be introduced, as well as periodic presentations and results debates will be made. In practical classes, the proposed exercises will be implemented and executed, presented, analyzed, criticized and discussed, in groups or individually, the progress of the work.

Programme

1. Case Study
1.1. Cover, material to study, student names, delivery date, etc?
1.2. First structure (provisional index);
1.3. Author, involved architects, etc;
1.4. Work, graphic record of the various projections of the building, examples of the relationship between constructiveness and applied materials;
1.5. Bibliographic references, (referenced bibliography, electronic serials, articles in electronic serials, etc.).

2. Rigorous representation - Constructive cutting, esc. 1:20
2.1. A3 File
2.1.1. Cover, material to study, student names, delivery date, etc
2.1.2. Structure (index);
2.1.3. Historical background, origin, chronology, culture and context;
2.1.4. Technical aspects;
2.1.5. Application modes;
2.1.6. Author, involved architects, etc.
2.1.7. Work, graphic record of the various projections of the building, examples of the relationship between constructiveness and applied materials;
2.1.8. Constructive cut and elevation;
2.1.9. Bibliographic references, (referenced bibliography, electronic serials, articles in electronic serials, etc.
2.2. A1 constructive cut
2.2.1. Constructive cut must clearly identify the set of materials and systems used for roofs, exterior walls, window frames, connections to intermediate floors and foundations.
2.2.2. Elevation, with the identification of the main covering materials with their stereotomy and implication in the expression and characterization of the building.
2.2.3. Subtitling model to be adopted in the drawings, must clearly identify the constructive function, used material and quot;general sizing" of the various materials applied.

3. Model of the constructive cut.
3.2. Escrow mockup 1:20
3.2.1. The models must demonstrate particular aspects of the set of materials and systems used for roofs, exterior walls, window frames, connections to intermediate floors and foundations.
3.2.2. Subtitling model to be adopted in the drawings, it must clearly identify the constructive function, the material used and the general dimensioning of the different materials applied.

Evaluation Type

Due to the nature of the discipline, the assessment will be continuous and permanent. In this sense, attendance will be taken into account, participation in classes, regularity and continuity of work, the response to the problems and challenges launched. The continuous assessment will also include two written tests and assignments, according to the school calendar. The fundamental moments of established assessment will also be fulfilled: the Attendance Test and the Final Exam.

Teaching Resources

To achieve the required objectives and skills, the following teaching resources will be used:
- Computers;
- Specialized bibliography available in the media library and library of Universidade Lusíada;
- Indication of fundamental texts for the learning and elaboration of research work;
- Multimedia material (documentaries, images, etc.;
- Laboratory classes that encourage research on building systems and materials.
