Main Aims/Objectives
- Understand the historical transformations that took place in the Western World between the 5th and 14th century: The Middle Age. And, particularly, the ones that provided an autonomous beginning to the Portuguese space.
- Understand, analyze and estimate the Urbanism and the Middle Age Architecture in Portugal, introducing them into the aesthetic currents with Pre-Roman, Roman and Gothic epithets.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- Acquire the Middle Age vocabulary and concepts, as well as its aesthetic currents and the artistic and technical processes, namely, the ones used in / by Architecture.
- Promote the direct contact with some works and places.
Skills to be acquired
- Identify and relate the following concepts: High and Low Middle Age, Roman Architecture and Urbanism, Early Christian, Visigothic, Islamic, Roman and Gothic.
- Analyze and relate works and places, as well as the aesthetic syncretism, distinguishing its restoration, rehabilitation and invention associated.
Teaching Procedures
- Through seminars, one will explore the bibliography and the samples to analyze. The classes will be open to discussion and the students will be oriented to presentation and defense of individual / group works. Whenever possible, the classes will be complemented with study visits, conferences and other relevant activities.
Programme
1. The Middle Age: concept and context. The Portuguese case: from the County to the Kingdom of Portugal.
2- From pre-roman to Roman Architecture.
2.1. The early existence of Urbanism and Architecture from Castro, Roman, Early Christian, Visigothic and Islamic cultures in Iberian and previous to Portuguese nationality territories.
2.2. The Roman Architecture: Monastic, Episcopal, Military and Civil.
3. From Roman Architecture to Gothic (c.1250-1450)
3.1- Defining Gothic.
3.2. The Alcobaça Abbey and the Order of Cistercians in Portugal. The cathedrals between the Roman persistence and the Gothic option. The Architecture of the new mendicant and military orders.
3.3. The Cities and the villages of Kings. The palace, the house, the street, the square and the fortification.
Evaluation Type
Written test with bibliographical support - 2.
Regular attendance and active participation inside and outside the seminars ( tutorials, conferences, study visits etc).

- Traditional and modern methods of projection.
- Movies, colloquies, exhibitions (inside or outside the University, but available in museums, galleries, foundations, fairs, etc) and study visits (in the region, Portugal and abroad).
