Main Aims/Objectives

Specify some key concepts for the reading and interpretation of urban space, its dynamics and transformations and its relations with other territories;
Know models of government and governance of cities and urban spaces;
Identify the challenges facing today´s cities and reflect on solutions that imagine the cities of the future.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Know the main factors responsible for the transformations of the urban fabric since the nineteenth century;
Identify processes and models of urban organization / transformation;
Understand the dynamics of the urban in its relationship with other territories.

Skills to be acquired

Objectivity and analytical, reflective and critical attitude towards models of socio-spatial organization.
Know urban trends and models and understand their relationship with the social, economic, political and cultural characteristics of societies.
Identify and present spatial morphological solutions adjusted to the challenges that contemporary cities and societies face and think prospective frameworks of urban-metropolitan development

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical-practical classes of expository character for the presentation of the theoretical contents of the curricular unit´s program.
Reflection classes and thematic discussion based on the analysis of scientific texts, press articles and documentaries presented in class.

Programme

1- Understanding cities and their transformations
1.1 The three urban revolutions: analysis of the main transformations of the cities and their relations with other territories;
1.2 Transformations, tensions and complementarities between urban and rural territories: urbanization, desurbanization, suburbanization, reurbanization, periurbanization.

2- The government and governance of cities and urban
2.1. The government and governance of cities: key concepts;
2.2 Urban governance and democracy;
2.3 From representative democracy to participatory democracy
2.3.1 Case studies: the SAAL process and the reversal of social housing policy in Portugal developed by the Estado Novo; examples of participatory and social architecture and Portugal.

3. Reimagining the cities and territories:
3.1. the example of urban and social utopias of the 19th and 20th centuries;
3.2. reflecting on the cities and territories of the future: towards new utopias?

Evaluation Type

The evaluation will focus on the Frequency and Exam tests carried out for this purpose, in addition to two interim tests.
