Main Aims/Objectives
The development of the abstraction ability, which is of the utmost importance in the creative act - because of the limitations of the human mind that only has the ability to grasp complex things when they are simplified and fragmented into parts.
The development of the logical-deductive abilities, especially the ones related with the perception and the representation of forms and objects in the plan and in the space.
Specific Aims/Objectives
To give the students the ability of using geometrical concepts and graphical codes, rigorous and measurable, that enables them to change from the three dimensions of the space to the drawing and vice-versa.
To give the students the ability to understand and use the established codes in the representation of design objects.
Skills to be acquired
The development of perception and representation abilities of real or idealised shapes, in the spatial context.
The first steps in the formation of the project´s methodology, through the exploration of the represented objects in a formal, functional and ergonomic way.
Teaching Procedures
Generally, the transmitted knowledge will be applied in concrete problems. The practical lessons will be the ultimate place for experimentation and validation of the theoretical knowledge.

Projection systems.
Multiple Orthogonal Projections.
Articulation of projections: European method and American method.
GEOMETRIC TRANSFORMATIONS
Symmetry - invariance process of bi or three-dimensional forms: translation, rotation and reflection;
Proportion - process of dimensional transformation maintaining the relations of the object: homothety;
Loss of proportion - the geometric process with deformation of the objects: homoloy and affinity.
AXONOMETRIC DRAWING
The system´s fundamental characteristics;
Perpendicular projection and oblique projection;
Reduction coefficients of the axonometric axis;
Representation of plane figures and tridimensional objects;
Construction of shades and shadows.
SURFACES
Classification of solids and surfaces;
Polyhedra: Platonic solids;
Ruled surfaces: drawn in plan and curved;
Surfaces of revolution.
Evaluation Type
The evaluation focuses on the frequency tests and exams, together with two tests that enable the quantification of the evaluation grade. Eventually, the evaluation grade will be complemented with optional graphic works.
Teaching Resources
The didactical material used will be essential, with the aim to give the students the ability of abstraction and spatial visualization.
Drawings on the board will be the main procedure. Furthermore, the projection of computer-generated images will also be used and, occasionally, three dimensional models.
