Building of professional context awareness and social responsibility.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Identification, analysis and articulation of national and international similarities;
Adequacy of functional, aesthetic, dimensional, cultural, sustainable values;
Develop products at the enterprise level applying the knowledge acquired;
Develop and rigorously present three-dimensional human scale projects;
To master rigorously technical drawings, quotations, 3D models and renders;
Adapt and independently implement design processes and products in real context.

Skills to be acquired

Understanding and applying design as an integrated and transdisciplinary strategy;
Ability to apply analytical, critical and systemic thinking and to use research as the strategic tool for innovation;
Ability to interpret and recreate briefings and to direct and coordinate Design processes;
Know how to present, substantiate, sustain and communicate ideas;
Ability to formulate emerging problems with initiative and entrepreneurial spirit.

Teaching Procedures

1. Classes Theoretical / Practical:
- Exposure and demonstration of content through various resources;
- Comparative and reflexive analyzes based on reference projects (case studies);
2. Tutorial Guidance:
- Follow-up and orientation of students´ work.

Programme

In the 3rd year of design degree the theme proposed for this year as an aggregator of the different courses is the Challenges included in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this context, the syllabus content will be articulated with the evaluation proposals that include projects, quick exercises, and differentiated activities that include not only the academic environment but also the contact and attention to the surrounding society:

P1 - EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
Focus: Portuguese Identity
- Foster a critical sense and the ability to observe the methodological choices adjusted to each design project and, in particular, to experimental design, craftdesign and author design;
- Develop structuring skills and knowledge to the research process;
- Identify design contributions in the evolution of Portuguese society, namely, artfacts and imagery of what it is to be Portuguese, influences and, Identity in design;
- Apply knowledge acquired in previous years promoting the entrepreneurial spirit of identity;
- Increase the repertoire referring to materials, techniques and references from the history of design.

P2 SOCIAL DESIGN
Focus: Environments and Interiors
- Briefing development;
- Geographical and socio-cultural framework;
- Principles of inclusive/social design and Human Center Design;
- Economic situation and social design;
- Differentiation of private space and social space;
- Spatial problem solving;
- Physical, psychological factors;
- Colors, textiles, lighting and materials for an indoor environment.

P3 - INTERIOR DESIGN
Foco: Bathroom, award search
Innovative and creative bathroom solutions
- Sustainable development goals (SDGs) established in the 2030 Agenda by the United Nations (UN).
- Ergonomics and anthropometry;
- Psychological, physical, social, cultural and technological dimensions
- Structural and Functional Relations in a System of Objects
- The cost and efficiency of products;
- Differentiation of public space and private space
- Adaptation and reuse of existing spaces;
- Lighting indoors;
- Importance of space-light-color-material;
- Solving spatial problems
- Functionalization and optimization of existing resources
- Ecology, life cycle and user behavior;
- Traffic flows, layout, exhibition and space organization.

P4 - DISPLAY DESIGN
Exploring three-dimensionality with a focus on Exhibition Design
- Adapt functional, aesthetic, dimensional, cultural, sustainable and ecological values;
- Differentiate public and private spaces;
- Mastering volumes, structures, openings and other elements;
- Know some of the materials, techniques and production costs of various exhibitors;
- Knowing principles of ergonomics and anthropometry adapted to space;
- Increase the repertoire of different materials, techniques and production costs;
- Analyze economic production values.

All the aforementioned themes will be developed in parallel with the following resources: critical analysis of examples; project methodologies; descriptive design memories; and means of embodiment / layout.

Evaluation Type

The assessment methodology will be carried out according to the General Evaluation Regulation as well as the Exceptional Continuous Assessment Regulation of the Universidade Lusíada. Continuous evaluation criteria, besides attendance, participation and commitment in the classes (for information purposes), the evaluation will focus mainly on the process, execution, presentation and sustentation of the four great proposals of work previously referenced and, finally, on the frequency exams (if possible).
