Main Aims/Objectives

It is intended that the students acquire general knowledge of statistics and that they become able to interpret and critically analyse statistical studies and results.

Specific Aims/Objectives

It is intended that the students learn how to use and interpret the measures and methods of univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics and acquire knowledge of statistical inference.

Skills to be acquired

Compute and interpret the main measures of descriptive statistics. Analyse graphical representations of data. Do estimations based on confidence intervals and perform hypothesis tests.

Teaching Procedures

The contents are presented following an expository methodology, that includes the theoretical development and the examples promoting their assimilation. When appropriate, texts for in depth study are made available. Exercise sets are proposed to the students. During the tutoring hours are the students are assisted in solving the exercises.

Evaluation Type

The continuous assessment is based on two written examinations, with the duration of about one hour each. The first one takes place half way through the semester and examines contents pertaining to the first half of the syllabus. The second one takes place towards the end of the semester and examines contents pertaining to the second half of the syllabus.

Teaching Resources

The teaching resources for students use are the books in the bibliography, computers and statistical software (Microsoft Excel).
