Main Aims/Objectives

To recognize the contribution of the social sciences to the understanding of deviance, taking into account the main sociological perspectives, framing the social conditions of it emergence.

Specific Aims/Objectives

- To study the socio-criminological contributions on deviance and social reaction;
- To reflect about the implications of different sociological theories for the explanation of deviant behavior.

Skills to be acquired

At the end of the course students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge regarding the main theories aimed at understanding deviant behavior;
- explain deviant behavior in relation to specific contexts and behaviors, based on the theories analyzed
- apply and explain the different theories of current crime.

Teaching Procedures

Demonstrative methodology, using both practical exercises and the analysis of scientific works.

1. Key concepts of sociological thinking
1.1. Comte e Durkheim
1.2. Functionalism, symbolic interactionism, ethnometodology

2. Contributions of sociological perspectives: Psychosocial and sociological approaches of deviance and delinquency
a) Chicago School:
i) Park ́s ecological theory;
ii) Burgess ́s concentric zones theory;
iii) Shaw and McKay ́s juvenile delinquency theories

b. R. Merton ́s Anomie Theory

c. Cohen ́s subculturel theory

d. Cloward and Ohlin ́s opportunity theory
i) Gangs study

e. Deviance and social processes
i) Social Learning theories
ii) Sutherland ́s Differential Association Theory

f. Interactionism and societal reaction theories (Becker and Goffman).

g. Social control theories:
i) Hirschi ́s control theory
ii) Gottfredson and Hirshi ́s self control theory
