Main Aims/Objectives

The main objective of the UC is to introduce students to the scientific knowledge on the relationship between psychopathology and delinquent behaviour. Its implications for criminal prevention and criminal justice system are also addressed.

Specific Aims/Objectives

By the end of the UC, students are expected:
-To know the basic concepts and distinguish the main Schools of thought in psychopathology and criminal psychopathology
- To identify the general characteristics of the nosographic categories and their relationship with antisocial behavior.
- To identify the main assessment methods in clinical psychopathology.
- Develop a reasoned and critical approach to the criminal, social and ethical implications of psychopathological diagnosis.

Skills to be acquired

At the end of the UC, students are expected to have developed:
- The basic skills for a systematic approach to mental disorders and their relationship to delinquent behavior.
- Skills for applying knowledge to the analysis of specific problems within the scope of the UC.
- Skills in analysis and discussion of relevant literature

Teaching Procedures

In the theoretical classes it will be developed, explored and discussed the programmatic topics.
The practical and tutorial classes, through the use of eliciting techniques, provide the opportunity to consolidate and apply theoretical and methodological knowledge.

Programme

I- General introduction to the UC.
II- Definition of criminal psychopathology in relation to general psychopathology, to special psychopathology, to psychiatry, and Clinical Criminology.
III-Historical and epistemological analysis of the scientific status of these disciplines and their relations.
IV- Specific analysis of central concepts related to crime: "danger", "risk", "risk assessment", "criminal personality", "psychopathy", "sociopathy", "antisocial personality" ...
V- The great nosographic framework and their relation with the criminal behavior: psychoses, neuroses and psychopaths.
VI- Psychopathy: classifications and perspectives.
VII- Relations between Law, Criminal Justice and Psychopathology.
