Main Aims/Objectives

This curricular unit aims to enable students to be critical, responsible and collaborative thinkers in the area of justice, ethics and fundamental rights. They will be encouraged to develop analytical skills, make informed ethical decisions and work effectively in a team, preparing them to face the ethical challenges that may arise in their academic and professional careers.

Specific Aims/Objectives

i. Understand the fundamental concepts of justice, ethics and fundamental rights and their relevance to contemporary society.
ii. Recognize the importance of ethics and fundamental rights in quantitative and qualitative investigations.
iii. Analyze the ethical challenges faced by researchers when carrying out quantitative and qualitative investigations.
iv. Identify and discuss the ethical principles that should guide the collection, analysis and interpretation of data.

Skills to be acquired

i. Collaborate effectively in group activities, sharing ideas, knowledge and perspectives on ethical issues.
ii. Demonstrate communication and active listening skills to promote constructive and respectful discussion with colleagues.
iii. Actively participate in the critical analysis of case studies and in the identification of ethical solutions, considering different points of view.

Teaching Procedures

i. Use of audiovisual resources to enrich lessons, including videos, multimedia presentations and relevant visual aids.
ii. Analysis of selected scientific texts, promoting critical reading and in-depth understanding of the topics covered in the curricular unit.
iii. Realization of practical exercises that involve the application of the learned concepts, allowing the students a practical and concrete experience related to the theoretical contents.

1. Introduction to Justice, Ethics and Fundamental Rights
1.1. Basic concepts of justice, ethics and fundamental rights
1.2. Exploration of the importance of these concepts in quantitative and qualitative issues
1.3. Discussion of the ethical challenges involved in this survey

2. Ethical Foundations in Quantitative Research
2.1. Ethical principles in the collection, analysis and presentation of quantitative data
2.3. Identification and discussion of possible ethical considerations in quantitative research
2.4. Debates on privacy, informed consent, and participant protection

3. Ethical Foundations in Qualitative Research
3.1. Ethical principles in the collection, analysis and interpretation of qualitative data
3.2. Exploring issues such as confidentiality, anonymity and consent in qualitative research
3.3. Discussion on the importance of considering cultural diversity and participants´ perspectives

4. Fundamental Rights of Research Participants
4.1. Overview of fundamental rights of research participants
4.2. Discussion of the responsibility of investigators in protecting these rights
4.3. Examples of ethical cases involving research and their effects on the rights of participants

5. Fundamental Rights of Researchers
5.1. The use of reflexivity as an ethical practice
5.2. Reflexivity in relation to research methods and research conduct
5.3. Reflexivity and the importance of field notebooks

Evaluation Type

Carrying out scientific work. During this activity, students will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the discipline. The work involves choosing a scientific article consisting of an empirical study on which students will be encouraged to reflect critically, namely through the development of reflexivity, centred on the ethical issues underlying any empirical study.
