Main Aims/Objectives

Stimulate the capacity for critical articulation between different scientific domains inherent to Theory and History, related to the scientific domain of design.
Understand the practice of design in specific social, cultural and economic contexts.
Apply design-specific nomenclatures and vocabulary.
Analyse the multiplicity inscribed in the practice of design.
Understand the complexity of designer/product/user communication.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Encourage and enhance synchronic and diachronic analysis of design projects.
Provide students with tools and knowledge that will allow them to produce scientific knowledge in design.
Understand the communication process.
Comprehend the different perspectives of designer and user in the communication process.
Understand the role of emotional design in the communicational relationship with the user.
Assess the importance of communication in the performance of the being designer.

Skills to be acquired

The students should be able to:
Achieve autonomously criticism and argumentation in design.
Identify and relate specific concepts of communication theory.
Comprehend the "communicational paradigm".
Understand the evolutionary process of systematic product image interventions.
Comprehend the importance of the intelligible communicational dimension of products on the market.
Recognize the semiotic dimension in the communicative power of products.

Teaching Procedures

The teaching methodology will consist of: 1) expository and interrogative methods during the programmatic contents explanation (with concrete examples); 2) active method by the techniques of debate and case study.

Programme

1. Basic Principles of Communication Theory: communication and its evolution; communication as a phenomenon; and, communication as a process.
2. Communication and semiotics: semiology and semiotics; applied semiotics; the product?s communication at the market(s).
3. The idea, the object and the user: the object and satisfaction of user needs; the functions of the object and its communicative power; and, aesthetics and aesthetic perception of the object.
4. The communication process in the designer / product / user relationship.

Evaluation Type

The evaluation will be carried out according to the specifications present in the General Evaluation Regulation of the University Lusíada. In addition, continuous assessment criteria are: a) attendance and oral participation in classes; b) an individual research work; c) two written evaluation exercises; d) the Frequency Test.

Individual and/or group work for presentation and debate.
