Main Aims/Objectives
The experience of man in society presupposes an understanding of a set of basic assumptions created, discovered or developed by a group of people, which results in the design culture.
The project culture thus aims at a critical analysis of the design process in order to respond with differentiating solutions in the context of a society in the multiple challenges on a global scale.
Specific Aims/Objectives
- Understand the concepts of design, culture and project culture;
- Analyze case studies that promote the discussion, analysis and criticism of design practices;
- Identify problems, analyze solutions and develop critical capacity in terms of the project´s culture;
- Understand the importance of culture and design in the context of society.
Skills to be acquired
- Understand the concepts of design and culture articulated in the project´s culture;
- Develop research capacity in order to support the implementation of an analysis and research;
- Provide students with knowledge of design practices inserted in the context of the project´s culture;
- Develop design practices for research, design, planning within the culture of the project and society.
Teaching Procedures
Theoretical-practical classes:
- Exhibition and demonstration of contents through various resources;
- Comparative and reflective analysis, research and research based on various projects;
- Experimentation and practical application of content using different proposals;
Accompanied Study/Tutorial Orientation:
- Monitoring of students´ work.

DESIGN CONTEXT AND PROJECT CULTURE
- The context of the design and project;
- The context of culture;
- The culture of the project in the different domains (micro and macro).
PROJECT CULTURE CASE STUDIES
- Project framework: methodology, multidisciplinarity, objective and market;
- Characteristics of the culture integrated into the project, society and project;
- Integration of design in society and in the multiple challenges on a global scale.
DESIGN PRACTICES
- Research, reflection and application of cultural knowledge in the project;
- Integration of design in the innovation formula, increasing the reach of innovation in society and in the multiple challenges on a global scale;
- Design practices through methods developed and oriented in logical sequences, endowed with skills in the technical, representation and design communication discourse.
Evaluation Type
Assessment according to the General Regulation of the 2nd Study Cycles Leading to the Master´s Degree at Universidade Lusíada. The Continuous Assessment criteria focus on:
- Research, reflection, process, theoretical support, application of knowledge and its communication.
A Continuous Assessment is proposed based on exercises developed throughout the semester and integrated in individual theoretical-practical work and its oral discussion.
Teaching Resources
Materials: Books, magazines, supporting texts, articles and scientific research, viewing videos
and websites in digital format.
Classroom: projector, whiteboard, markers and lightbox.
Internet: Microsoft Teams platform and Moodle platform
