Presentation

The jewelry industry has been experiencing and confronted in the last decades with many environmental and social challnages all around the world. From civil wars to human rights violations, high toxicity usage and disposal, extensive energy use and high emissions, enormous amounts of waste from production and creating a devestating impact on biodiversity. As some of these problems are becoming common knowledge there is still a big gap even within the industry along the supply chain about sustainable issues and how to address these challanges in a responsible matter leaving no one behind.

In this course we will go over the jewelry supply chain structure, the main jewelry hubs around the world and based on these locations discuss the challanges that occur and how to deal with them. We would also focus on common solutions that are offered and what are their advantes and loopholes and try to over come these areas as well.

Objectives

1. educate the participants about sustainable jewelry issues, problems and current challenges.
2. improve their critical thinking skills on the topic and guide them on how to find reliable sources.
3. develop thoughts processes that are innovative and provoke system‘s change.
4. Present sustainable solutions and developments while sharing their strengths and weaknesses.
5 the participants will have basic tools to address sustainable challenges in their profession after the course.


Target audience

Jewelry industry professionals along the supply chain. At the same time the course  can also fit jewelry students, jewelry interns, jewelry apprenticeship, etc.

Learning, Methodology and Assessement

In this course we would go over content in the form of presentations and open discussions between all participants. We will do some hands on exercises in order to train the participants  to think about sustainability issues while they are doing their day to day assignments. During the course we will try to assess where the participants can find sustainable issues and risks in their professional paths and think about strategies to address these issues and where to go for more information and support on their daily work.

As a final outcome each participant will create a short presentation presenting daily sustainable challenges and potential solutions based on research and knowledge collected during the course.

Language

The course will be lectured in English.


Certification

A minimum of 70% of presential attendance and a positive assessment of the final work to be developed: Targets to achieve sustainability and strategies to overcome difficulties, is required for the issuing of Certificate.



Lecturer(s) Biographical Note(s)

Isabel Cantista
Isabel Cantista is the Dean of the School of Economics and Business Studies from North Lusíada University Centre. Isabel lectures Marketing and Innovation management at University Lusíada. Isabel is a Senior Researcher at COMEGI – Centre of Research from University Lusíada, being responsible for Research on Fashion Sustainability.
Isabel has founded the Global Fashion Conference, in 2008, the international conference on Fashion studies based on the concept of the sectorial innovation system.
She has edited books and published papers on topics related to fashion entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainability. Isabel has been Referee for Social Sciences projects for the ESF – European Science Foundation at Strasbourg several times. At present she is a member of the Expert Panel for the Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation of the European Commission.

Danielle Keller Aviram

Danielle Keller Aviram is a sustainable jewelry consultant, researcher and lecturer. She has been mainly working with jewelry-related organizations and businesses like CIBJO, RJC, FAIRMINED and more developing and implementing their sustainable action plans and strategies, educational content and workshops. At the same time, she has been writing about sustainable jewelry and fashion for blogs and magazines like JCK, Rapaport magazine among others and did lectures and workshops in universities like London College of Fashion and Goldsmiths university in London, Kolding in Denmark, and Notre Dame university in Beirut. She had a B.A in jewelry design, M.A focused on sustainability and has been working in the jewelry industry now for 14 years.


Number of hours - Timetable - Dates - Material needed (hardware/software)

The course has 35 academic hours divided into 5 days of 7 hours each day. In it's current structure it fits to postgraduates from the jewelry industry and people working in the jewelry field.
The course will be held in person since besides the presentations and lectures there are exercises and discussions planned as part of the plan.

The course will take place in a week of the month of October 2023, to be confirmed.

Schedule between 9h to 17h, with a short break in the morning and a break of 1 hour for lunch at the premises between 12.30 to 13.30h.

Deadline to Register and Payments

The amount of €100,00 paid when registering will be deductible to the total value of the course.
Payment should be made in two installments: 50% in the last week of March and 50% in the last week of April.

Submissions to be made online until the 17th of September.
Beginning of the course: 16th October 2023

The course will be open provided there is a minimum of participants
