Main Aims/Objectives

This curricular unit is intended to give to Interior Design students the opportunity to apply concepts previously studied through the analysis and discussion of case-study material selection and manufacturing processes.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Present and sensitize students to the correct selection of materials and technologies, in greater depth the polymeric, according to their properties;
Transmit Rapid Prototyping knowledge to adapt exterior shapes to series production technologies, taking into account the specificity of production technologies and minimize significant losses in product manufacturing.

Skills to be acquired

Identification of service specifications;
Identification of parameters to compare the materials;
Pre-selection of materials, iterative procedure with the choice of manufacturing technology; Use information sheets and selection of materials and processes software;
Use of rapid prototyping tools.

Teaching Procedures

The methodology to be applied is based on the theoretical and practical nature of the discipline, increasing theoretical contents through the lecture method, and the realization of monitored project exercises, guided by the teacher. The demonstrative and active method plan to promote practical discipline and direct contact between the teacher and the student, giving particular attention to design and development tasks/jobs.

Programme

1. Technical attributes, aesthetic and eco attributes of metal alloys, polymers, ceramic, woods, and composite materials;
2. Characterization of each type of material A brief definition of each type of material Design Notes
- Typical Uses
- Materials competitors and the environment Technical Notes
3. Characterization of metal alloys, polymers, ceramics and composites.
4. Natural Composite Materials
- The wood. Wood Rolled, the plywood and pellets
- The cork. Raw material and structure of the cork. Components of the cork. Physical properties of the cork Cork products: natural cork, lump and pellets;
5. Tools for virtual prototyping;
6. Rapid Prototyping
