Main Aims/Objectives

Understand the organization and structure of the systems where criminal investigation is inserted;
Understanding and critical reflection on the role of criminal investigation activity on common crime in criminal proceedings and criminology;
Acquisition of critical capital in the face of criminal justice products, and interception with criminology.

Specific Aims/Objectives

Understand the evolutionary process of the practice of criminal investigation, and its repercussion on social systems;
Internalize the epistemology inherent in the practice of criminal investigation on common crime;
To know the criminological products arising from the practice of criminal investigation, as well as the possibilities of interception between science, and criminal investigation.

Skills to be acquired

Know how to critically analyze the practices, models and organisational structures where criminal investigation is inserted;
Know the products of criminal investigation, and how they become objects of interest to criminology.

Teaching Procedures

Theoretical exhibition classes with audiovisual support.
Tutorial orientation classes, for the development, presentation and study of problematic and practical cases, as well as oral exposure of written works and interventions.

Programme

1. Society and social control;
a) The justice system;
b) Internal security;
c) The organization of criminal investigation;
d) Criminal investigation as a social control activity;
e) Criminal investigation, interdependence and autonomy, among the pillars of democracy.

2. Epistemology for the practice of criminal investigation
a) The concept of criminal investigation;
b) The actors involved in the process;
c) The method of criminal investigation-the centrality on the clue;
d) Precautionary measures;
e) Means of obtaining proof, and means of proof;
f) Criminalistic and forensic sciences ? examinations and exams;
g) Judicial inspection;
h)The problem of contamination;

3. Criminal Investigation and Criminology
a) Criminological products;
b) Intercetions between criminal investigation and science.

Evaluation Type

Two mandatory tests.
An individual written work, with oral exposure.
Attendance.

Teaching Resources

Bibliography and legislation indicated.
Consultation of monographs and articles.
Use of video projector and other materials, some of which are available to students on the Moodle electronic platform of Lusíada University.
